Any other older folks like me plan to take a moment Saturday to remember Jerry Garcia?
I take a few moments each day to remember Jerry Garcia.
Any excuse to recall the greatness of the late Jerry Garcia is worth the time. The magnitude of his contributions and the scope of his musical genius becomes more obvious with each passing year.
These lyrics from Ripple always me recall:
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come thru the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

The Jerry Garcia Collection, Vol. 2: Let It Rock $12.49 For Jerry Garcia, 1975 was a seminal year that found him splitting time between recording Blues for Allah with the Dead, directing The Grateful Dead Movie, and forming the Jerry Garcia Band, his long-running side project. JGB’s early days are the subject of a two-disc live collection of previously unreleased recordings from that momentous year. JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION, VOL. 2: LET IT ROCK, JERRY G… |

Not for Kids Only $11.73 An aptly named album if ever there was one, Not for Kids Only combines the talents of two legendary performers, the late Jerry Garcia, singer-guitarist of the Grateful Dead, and David Grisman, mandolinist and father of “dawg music,” a melding of bluegrass, jazz, swing, Latin, and Jewish klezmer sounds. On this 1993 recording, the two devoted friends make seemingly effortless music, adapting tradit… |

The Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter – Criterion Collection $19.98 To cite Gimme Shelter as the greatest rock documentary ever filmed is to damn it with faint praise. This 1970 release benefits from a horrifying serendipity in the timing of the shoot, which brought filmmakers Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin aboard as the Rolling Stones’ tumultuous 1969 American tour neared its end. By following the band to the Altamont Speedway near San Francisco fo… |

Fun with Dick and Jane [VHS] $8.19 Jane Fonda was so respected as a serious actress that her comedy chops sometimes were overlooked. But it should be remembered that her first real hits (Barefoot in the Park, Cat Ballou) were comedies. This underrated 1977 outing also played for laughs, though it had social-satire underpinnings that still ring true. Fonda and George Segal play an upwardly mobile couple in the time before yuppies–t… |

Coyote Ugly $5.48 As a producer, Jerry Bruckheimer makes movies for guys, mostly action films like Top Gun and Gone in 60 Seconds. The ones he makes that feature women, such as Flashdance and now Coyote Ugly, broaden their appeal with a fondness for “strong women.” For Bruckheimer, that means self-determined, attractive women who don’t need men to get what they want. Is there anything sexier than that? In Coyote U… |
